Background of the Study
Speech therapy plays an essential role in addressing communication disorders among students, significantly impacting their academic performance and social integration. In Suleja LGA, Niger State, the effect of speech therapy is particularly critical, as many students with communication disorders face challenges that hinder their educational progress. The provision of specialized speech therapy interventions is designed to improve speech clarity, language comprehension, and overall communication skills, thereby fostering greater academic engagement and self-confidence (Mustapha, 2023). However, despite the proven benefits of speech therapy, its implementation in Suleja LGA is often constrained by factors such as limited access to qualified therapists, inadequate infrastructural facilities, and insufficient funding. Many schools in the region are unable to provide consistent and comprehensive speech therapy services due to a shortage of trained professionals and a lack of dedicated therapy rooms and equipment (Olanrewaju, 2024). In addition, the prevailing cultural attitudes towards communication disorders may lead to underdiagnosis and delayed intervention, further complicating the educational trajectories of affected students. Recent studies underscore the importance of early and sustained speech therapy interventions in mitigating the long-term effects of communication disorders, yet such interventions remain sporadic in many parts of Nigeria (Chidi, 2025). The present study is motivated by the need to examine the specific effects of speech therapy on students in Suleja LGA, evaluating both the academic and psychosocial outcomes of these interventions. By systematically exploring the impact of speech therapy, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing service delivery and ensuring that students with communication disorders receive the support necessary to thrive academically and socially. This investigation will consider the quality, frequency, and duration of speech therapy sessions, as well as the professional qualifications of the therapists involved, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to successful outcomes in speech therapy programs (Mustapha, 2023; Olanrewaju, 2024; Chidi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of speech therapy for students with communication disorders, there are significant challenges in its effective implementation in Suleja LGA. Many schools struggle with the provision of regular and high-quality speech therapy services due to a shortage of qualified professionals and inadequate facilities. This gap in service delivery often results in delayed diagnosis and intervention, which can have lasting negative effects on students’ academic progress and social integration (Abubakar, 2023). In addition, limited financial resources restrict the availability of modern therapeutic tools and materials, further compromising the quality of interventions provided. The inconsistent application of speech therapy programs means that some students receive intermittent support, while others may be entirely excluded from such services. Cultural factors, including societal stigmas associated with communication disorders, exacerbate the problem by discouraging early identification and the pursuit of therapy (Eze, 2024). This inconsistency in service provision undermines the potential benefits of speech therapy, leading to a situation where students with communication disorders are unable to fully develop their speech and language skills. As a result, these students often experience lower academic achievement and reduced self-esteem, which in turn limits their future educational and career opportunities. This study seeks to address these critical issues by investigating the effect of speech therapy on students with communication disorders in Suleja LGA. The research will focus on identifying the key factors that influence the success of speech therapy interventions and will assess the extent to which these interventions improve communication skills and academic performance. By examining the underlying causes of service delivery gaps, the study aims to inform policy makers and educational practitioners about the necessary measures to enhance speech therapy programs in the region (Abubakar, 2023; Eze, 2024; Mustapha, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the impact of speech therapy on the communication skills of students with communication disorders in Suleja LGA.
• To assess the role of infrastructural and financial resources in the delivery of speech therapy services.
• To propose recommendations for improving the effectiveness and consistency of speech therapy interventions.
Research Questions
• How does speech therapy affect the communication skills of students with communication disorders in Suleja LGA?
• What infrastructural and financial challenges impede the delivery of effective speech therapy services?
• What measures can be taken to enhance the overall effectiveness of speech therapy interventions in the region?
Research Hypotheses
• H1: Regular speech therapy significantly improves the communication skills of students with communication disorders.
• H2: Inadequate infrastructural and financial resources negatively impact the quality of speech therapy services.
• H3: Cultural stigmas associated with communication disorders reduce the likelihood of early intervention and consistent therapy.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of speech therapy in improving the communication skills and academic performance of students with communication disorders in Suleja LGA. The findings will provide critical insights for educators, therapists, and policymakers, guiding improvements in therapy delivery and resource allocation. Enhanced speech therapy services are expected to foster better educational outcomes and improved quality of life for affected students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to investigating the effect of speech therapy on students with communication disorders in Suleja LGA, Niger State, and does not extend to other regions or related educational interventions.
